The Service and Action programme at Global Jaya School encourages students to become aware of their roles and their responsibilities as members of communities. This programme requires them to take an active part in the community in which they live.

The emphasis of this programme is on developing community awareness and community concerns and the skills needed to make an effective contribution to society.

This programme also encourages empathy and respect towards others that can lead to deeper understanding of the community. Engaging students in positive action and contact with other social and cultural environments can enrich them emotionally, socially, morally and culturally.

In each year level, students are expected to complete these requirements for SA. Those that do not complete their SA may not be edible for automatic progression to the next year level.

In order to gain the MYP certificate, in Year 10, students will have met the expectations of service and action to the satisfaction of our school.

A. Requirements:

The IBO considers that the qualities and motives of an act of service and action are considered more important than the number of hours devoted to it.  However, to give guidance for you so that you are encouraged to give your best, you will be expected to complete service and action according to the categories of activity stated below:

YearSemester 1Semester 2
 7 1 Category - 1 activity
or
2 Category - 2 activity
or
3 Category - 3 activity
1 Category - 1 activity
or
2 Category - 2 activity
or
3 Category - 3 activity
 8
 9
 10

The explanations for each category are as follows:

•    Category - 1 activity:

An activity requiring an ongoing or regular time commitment with substantial student planning and organisation.

•    Category - 2 activity:

An activity requiring an ongoing or regular time commitment without substantial student planning and organisation.

•    Category - 3 activity:

A ‘one off’ activity (that is, no regular time commitment) that does not require much planning or organisation by the student.

It is highly recommended that you do the category - 1 activity per semester, to develop your planning/organising skills, as this will serve you well in the future.  However, you can also choose to do a series of several smaller projects (category - 2 activity or category - 3 activity) that meet the requirement. The exact combinations are up to you, but be sure to check with the SA coordinator first e.g.: 1 Category 1 activity plus 2 Category 3 activity.

You can also choose the time when you want to do the service. You may begin your service and action during your holidays, weekends,  after school hours or school hours approved by Principals.

The school will always try to develop links with other social organisations and create school activities that provide opportunities for service and action, especially for younger students (Year 7 and 8). For older students (Year 9 and 10) should actively seek service opportunities (hint: ask parents, relatives or teachers to start with). It is suggested that you do the service and action in the broader community outside the school.

B. Documentation:

The IBO does not require that the service undertaken by students is given a grade. However, in order to give encouragement for you to do your best, we have set some criteria to follow for self evaluation. Your self evaluation will be based on your responses that are recorded on the service and action proposal, planning sheet, supervisor’s evaluation, student’s reflection and photos. Students must use service and action booklet and ManageBac (https://globaljaya.managebac.com/) to record and document all their service and action activities.
